Free medical advice (other than GPs)

This article provides information on alternatives to visiting a GP if you have a minor illness or ailment.

It can sometimes take a while to get an appointment to see a GP, so it may be useful to know that pharmacists can also provide free expert advice on the best treatment for a wide range of illnesses and minor ailments.

Pharmacists are experts in the use of medicines, and your local community pharmacist is a trained medical professional. You can visit a community pharmacy without the need to make an appointment. Several pharmacies in the city are open until late evening and on Sundays.

Pharmacy First

As well as free medical advice, your local pharmacy can now provide free medication for some illnesses and minor ailments under a scheme called Pharmacy First. The scheme is available to students in full-time education from the ages of 18-24.

Pharmacy First allows people who receive free prescriptions to go straight to their pharmacist to receive treatment, for selected minor ailments, without needing to visit their GP to get a prescription.
