Help to find a volunteering opportunity

This article will explain how the University of Portsmouth’s Careers and Employability Service can help you find a volunteering role, and give an overview of what types of roles are available.

The Careers and Employability Service Volunteering Team promote a variety of volunteering opportunities with charities and not-for-profit organisations in the UK. These roles usually require a regular commitment (the average is four hours per week for a period of three months), to allow you to gain a substantial amount of work experience to add to your CV, develop your skills and assist your career planning.  Volunteering is also a fantastic was to connect with new people, build self-confidence and give back to a cause you feel passionately about.  Certain roles are suitable for short-term course placements, please book an appointment with a member of the team for further details.

What volunteering roles are available?

To make sure there is something for everyone the Careers and Employability Service has a wide range of roles on offer. To assist you with your search all the opportunities are broken down into 11 sectors:

 

  • Child and Youth Work
  • Creative Arts, Culture and Heritage
  • Health and Social Care
  • Marketing and Communications
  • One-off Volunteering
  • Research, Business and Administration
  • Retail and Hospitality
  • Science and Environment
  • Social and Community Justice
  • Sports
  • Technology

There are also four large-scale projects that are advertised at key times of the year, they are:

  • Code Club - teaching children aged nine - 11 coding skills

  • The Reading Scheme - offering one-to-one reading tuition to pupils in local primary schools

  • STEM Ambassadors - inspiring young people to pursue STEM careers

  • Hampshire Constabulary’s StudentWatch - helping make students safer and improving community relations
